The Parkhill-Stanley Park residential area dates back to the early 1900s, when some of the first residents of Calgary called it home. More than 100 years later, the area – which is just south of downtown along McLeod Trail, from Mission Road to 45th Avenue – is still a favourite place to call home. That's mostly due to beautiful Stanley Park and Elbow River.
Wealthy Calgarians will enjoy the spectacular views from the homes up on the ridge in Parkhill-Stanley Park. Being so close to Calgary’s financial district is also a big selling point, which is why the neighbourhood is more affluent than other inner-city communities. Recent development has brought in more density and a more diverse community.
Parkhill-Stanley Park has a mix of people with diverse spending habits. Many of the homeowners are from the wealthy business set, but there are average income earners who enjoy life close to downtown shopping and Stanley Park. This means the neighbourhood’s fantastic views of downtown may be right outside your door or you may have to walk a bit to see. Either way the views are free.
Parkhill-Stanley Park was one of the worst hit areas during the 2013 flood. The low-lying areas around the Elbow River, including Stanley Park, were underwater. Many of the original character homes were lost and many more were severely damaged. The neighbourhood has rebuilt itself and continues working to get back to the lush riverside community it once was.
MacLeod Trail is the main route in and out of Parkhill-Stanley Park, so it can get busy during rush hour. From the north end of the neighbourhood, 4 Street SW can also get you downtown quickly. Being cordoned in by the Elbow River can limit the options for getting out of the area though. Public transit services the area with several bus routes and the C-Train station at 39 Avenue.
Outdoor enthusiasts have a lot to choose from in Parkhill-Stanley Park. Besides Stanley Park itself, there is Reader Rock Gardens and Cemetery Hill where you can find out about the city’s past by taking a cemetery tour. Sport and fitness training can be found at the Talisman Centre, and for entertainment, the Saddledome and Calgary Stampede grounds are just to the north.
Development in Parkhill-Stanley Park has brought a mix of people to this older neighbourhood. Homeowners along the ridge are affluent and enjoy manicured lawns and magnificent views. But among the mature homes are newer townhouses and apartment buildings, and these attract a younger but upwardly mobile group who love being close to downtown. As a result, there are not as many young families as you would find elsewhere in Calgary.
Parkhill-Stanley Park has the most common amenities families and singles are looking for. There is the proximity to shopping along MacLeod Trail along with the short drive to downtown for more luxurious items and services. And having Stanley Park right outside your door attracts many residents who share a love for outdoor recreation.
