Promontory is one of Chilliwack’s emerging communities, built on the slopes of Promontory Hill. Promontory Road leads into the neighborhood from the north and winds up into the hillsides of Exstrom Road. Teskey Way runs roughly east-west, becoming Teskey Road on the west and leading to Sylvan Drive in the east.
Promontory is all about active family lifestyles. A network of walking trails and bike paths thread through the neighbourhood and up into the older acreages and forest at the top of the hill. You’ll be rewarded for your effort with great views across the valley, and great legs. And with parks and playgrounds and open gym time at the local community school, you’ll find it hard to stay still.
Winding suburban streets branch off from Promontory Road, offering plenty of newer, modern homes in which to raise a family. Up in the hills, a country feel remains, with farmhouses and forests and wildflowers in profusion. Yet there’s also convenience: the neighbourhood shopping centre offers groceries, daycare and other everyday essentials, and Vedder Crossing is just down the hill.
There are plenty of young families calling Promontory home, as evidenced by a healthy enrollment of nearly 600 students attending Promontory Elementary. Chilliwack’s relatively affordable single-family homes are also a factor in attracting those who want room to grow and a yard for the kids to play.
Promontory is self-contained, yet connected. Playgrounds and parks throughout the area provide chances to meet other families, and there are recreation programs for all ages offered by the Promontory Community School Association. The shopping centre is a nightly hotspot as commuters pick up pizza and last-minute dinner ingredients on their way up the hill. Trails and pedestrian pathways connecting the streets keep it walkable, too.
As with almost any suburb, you’ll probably want a car for getting around. However, Chilliwack’s public transit system connects Promontory with destinations such as Cottonwood Mall, the Intercity Bus Depot, high schools and middle schools, and the town centre north of Highway 1. Bike lanes are also available on some major roads.
The affordability, community connectedness and closeness to nature are all big pluses of living in Promontory, not to mention the views. The amenities in Promontory are somewhat limited, but it’s a short drive or bus ride to Sardis and Vedder Crossing for schools, churches, and shopping and services.
With the price of a home here about half of what it costs in Metro Vancouver, residents can afford a relatively affluent middle-class lifestyle. Couples in athletic gear and moms with rugged strollers can be seen on the trails, and there are plenty of SUVs and trucks parked in driveways. Hauling kids and shopping is helped along by Chilliwack’s relatively low gas prices.
The Promontory location of this Fraser Valley chain is a popular spot for pizza delivery and takeout, and they have a few tables for dining in too.
