Cathedral

Regina

Introduction

The Cathedral area of Regina, with its trendy shops, tree-lined streets, and eclectic residents, is one of the city's most vibrant and sought-after neighbourhoods. Located to the west of Regina's downtown core, the area is bordered by Albert Street to the east, Wascana Creek to the south and west, and the mainline of the Canadian Pacific Railroad to the north.

Lifestyle

Renowned for its community spirit and funky shopping district, Cathedral is primarily residential although there are plenty of unique shops, restaurants, and services along 13th Avenue. This vibrant urban village offers a mix of housing types with a focus on restoration and renovations that maintain the historic character. The annual Cathedral Village Arts Festival is a major draw for the area.

The Vibe

A highly walkable area with a welcoming, artistic feel, Cathedral is a diverse and unique community that offers residents historic character and modern amenities. From the picturesque tree-lined streets to the funky coffee shops to the one-of-a-kind boutiques, this popular and lively neighbourhood is a comfortable creative haven for residents of all ages.

Meet the Neighbours

Known for its artistic and cultural elements, Cathedral is home to an eclectic population of all ages. A youthful and creative vibe dominates the trendy cafes and boutiques, and young families make use of the area's parks and two elementary schools. Seniors enjoy the active Cathedral Neighbourhood Centre, churches, and proximity to grocery stores and other amenities. Homeowners just edge out the renters here at 57 versus 43 per cent.

In the Area

Chat with friends at 13th Avenue Coffee House or take art classes at the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre. Residents can also indulge their sweet tooth at Dessart Sweets Ice Cream & Candy Store or catch up on reading at the Regina Public Library's Connaught Branch. In the summer, stroll under the canopy of century-old elm trees in Leslie Park, or hit the ice at the outdoor rink in winter.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

While the majority of the 7,000-plus residents of Cathedral identified personal vehicles as their primary form of transportation in the 2006 census, 700 people preferred walking, 245 relied on public transit, and 155 opted to ride bicycles. The area is easy to access from Lewvan Drive from the west or Victoria Avenue via Albert Street from the east, and the Regina International Airport is just 5-10 minutes away by car.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

The annual Cathedral Village Arts Festival has grown into a major event, closing down 13th Avenue so tens of thousands of people can attend the popular street fair. While this provides excitement, culture, and business to the vibrant Cathedral neighbourhood, it also brings noise and traffic congestion for residents. These headaches are a small price to pay for the benefits the festival provides, though.

Dollars & Sense

Cathedral offers residents and visitors a range of interesting shops and services, from affordable groceries at Safeway to premium hairdressing and spa services at Zazu The Salon. Treat yourself or someone special to unique gift and jewellery items from Mata Gallery or gourmet cupcakes from Cathedral Bakery. Whether you're looking for designer dress shops or laid-back pubs, the area has plenty for all tastes and budgets.
