The well-established neighbourhood of Uplands in the City of Langley provides a tranquil quality of life to its residents. Uplands is in the northwest corner of the city, bounded on the north by Grade Crescent till 208th Street, then continuing along 48th Avenue to 210th Street. The eastern border of Uplands runs along 210th Street, ending in a cul-de-sac.
Rhododendrons and roses, cul-de-sacs and driveways, Uplands represents the best of what suburban life can offer. This car-oriented neighbourhood is largely comprised of homes built in the sixties, seventies and eighties on large lots, but many homes are being updated to today’s standards while others are being razed and new, larger homes are replacing them.
Away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, this north Regina neighbourhood appeals to families looking for a quiet place to stretch out and enjoy the plentiful green space. The expansive Mt. Pleasant Sport Park, with its speed skating oval, tennis courts, and athletic fields, is handy for active residents. Families can enjoy nearby Evraz Park (formerly IPSCO Wildlife Park) with its giant slide, outdoor pool, and buffalo-viewing onsite.
Uplands encompasses several smaller neighbourhoods – including Kensington Greens, Mount Pleasant, and Parkview – with varying housing types and prices available. As of the 2011 Statistics Canada census, Uplands was home to 5,280 people, 83 percent of whom were born in Saskatchewan, 17 percent from elsewhere in Canada, and five percent from outside of Canada. Residents range from infants to seniors, and the schools, parks, and well-kept homes attract families.
Residents of suburban Uplands can take advantage of numerous athletic opportunities, from strolling to speed skating at Mt Pleasant Sport Park in the southern section of the neighbourhood. Indoor sports and fitness programs as well as private functions occur at the Uplands Community Centre, and the nearby Northgate Mall features more than 75 shops and services, including the province's largest Rider Store.
While most Uplands residents rely on their own vehicles for transportation, a small portion of the population takes advantage of Regina Transit buses, route 5 (Uplands/Downtown) in particular. Other parts of the city can be conveniently accessed via the major thoroughfares of Albert Street to the west or the Ring Road to the south. The Regina International Airport is less than a 20-minute drive or one-hour bus ride away.
With the Co-Op Refinery Complex located east of the neighbourhood, Uplands residents may occasionally notice unpleasant odours, but the community is located a safe distance away from any fires or explosions that could arise within the oil refinery. The area remains quiet and safe with well-maintained schools, parks, and attractive homes. Residential Uplands may be lacking in commercial development, but Northgate Mall is only a five-minute drive to the south.
A suburban neighbourhood with properties ranging from modest rental apartments to spacious executive homes, Uplands can accommodate a range of budgets. The average pre-tax household income for the area was $90,030, according to the 2011 census. Though it continues to grow, there are currently few opportunities for residents to spend their money within Uplands – however a number of affordable shops, restaurants, and services can be accessed in neighbouring communities.
Residents gather at this active community centre to take part in fitness programs such as yoga, gymnastics, and ice skating. There is an outdoor playground onsite and facilities can be rented for special events.
