The community of Sherwood is located in the northeast part of Charlottetown, between University Avenue and East Royalty. Sandwiched between Sherwood Rd. and Belvedere Ave., and running along Mount Edward Rd. over to Falconwood Dr., this middle-class community is quietly residential and recreational, although it does support a thriving automotive and industrial scene.
Sherwood features great shopping, schools, churches, and several small parks. There is also a scenic golf course nearby in addition to hiking and biking trails. Whether you’re looking to get something to eat, shopping for a new car, or picking up health and beauty needs for the whole family, locals can find nearly everything within Sherwood.
With several parks, a hiking/biking trail and a lovely golf course, Sherwood is a great place to play. There are several eateries, general shopping areas, schools, banks, churches, and hospitals all within a short distance. With affordable public transit and housing, there is something for every budget in this community.
While Sherwood is a quiet neighbourhood, it’s located near University Avenue – the main drag in Charlottetown. Some of the older streets are narrow, one-way traffic routes, which can be confusing for drivers. And while it’s convenient to have an airport nearby, the planes can be noisy. Prince Edward Island’s natural beauty, seafood, Cow’s Ice Cream and Anne Of Green Gables tourism help make up for most shortcomings.
Sherwood is close to the Charlottetown Airport and the pleasant streets provide easy ways to get around for both cars and pedestrians. The neighbourhood offers access to local public transit (Trius Transit) and the beautiful Confederation Trail, which has been built on abandoned railways, also runs through the community. Along with its location close to nearly everything in Charlottetown, Sherwood is only a few minutes away from lovely Brackley Beach.
There are two schools right in the neighbourhood (Stonepark Intermediate and Sherwood Elementary), and two hospitals (Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Hillsborough Hospital). Popular eateries include Buns & Things Bakery, Sam’s Family Restaurant, and Outriders Cookhouse. There is a large automotive presence in Sherwood, with assorted car dealerships, garages, and automotive services on hand for residents.
The neighbourhood is made up of apartment complexes, single-family houses, and duplexes. The population is comprised of young families, retirees, and students. During working hours, employees of all ages work at the local retail and industrial businesses and in government offices. Sherwood has a pleasant, laid-back sort of vibe and caters to everyone with its amenities.
The neighbourhood of Sherwood was originally a farming community named Sherwood Station. The area experienced most of its development during the 1960s and 1970s, but that same village vibe is prevalent today. Residents here are middle-class, and they enjoy convenient access to parks and businesses. Artist Levi Cannon created a wood carving of Robin Hood to proudly watch over the area.
Serving customers since 1956, Sherwood Drug Mart is Prince Edward Island’s oldest family-run pharmacy. Centrally located in Sherwood, this is the place to get all your health and beauty needs.
