NEIGHBOURHOOD

Merritton

St. Catharines

Introduction

Known as “The heart of St. Catharines,” the former town of Merritton is now one of the most happening neighbourhoods in the city. Home to both the Pen Centre (Niagara’s largest mall) and Brock University, this east side community stretches from Highway 406 to the Welland Canal, and from Lincoln Avenue/Queenston Street to St. David’s Road/Townline.

Lifestyle

The preservation of greenspace in key areas, such as along the old Welland canals, make this a Niagara walker’s paradise. It’s an active area, home to the Centennial Arena and Lion’s Park, and even has its own Merritton Athletic Association, founded in 1946. Merritton still retains its working class traditions, despite the fact that residents are now likely to commute to an office job in the city.

The Vibe

Merritton prides itself on being an important contributor to city life. From its early days as an industrial manufacturing hub to its more recent transformation into an entertainment, dining and shopping mecca, the neighbourhood has seen many improvements in recent years. New developments are re-energizing this friendly smalltown neighbourhood, and gradually creating a more upscale urban environment.

Meet the Neighbours

Home to a huge number of students, families and senior citizens, Merritton’s population is eclectic. Young single professionals make up a growing number, and there are more single people of all ages living here than elsewhere in Niagara (and even the province), if you happen to be in the market for love! It’s a close-knit community that is very welcoming to newcomers, and neighbours look out for each other.

In the Area

There are 11 parks which see a lot of use by dog walkers and families. There are a number of local elementary and secondary schools, both public and private. St. Catharines General and all the facilities of the Niagara Health System are in easy reach. The Merritton Community Centre on Park Road also houses the Centennial Arenas and Lions Club facilities.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Convenient access to the 406 and QEW, and within minutes of all local highways, Merritton is a commuter’s dream. The St. Catharines Transit Commission operates a number of routes along major arteries, including Glendale, Oakdale, Merritt Street/Hartzel Road, and residents are never more than a few minutes’ walk away from the nearest stop.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

There’s definitely a working-class feel to Merritton that lingers despite the recent wave of gentrification, and somewhat higher unemployment as the result of downsizing in the automotive industry affects the community. But the locals have embraced the shiny new lifestyle with gusto, and the slight class differences amongst residences only serve to make it feel more like a big city neighbourhood – which is not necessarily a bad thing!

Dollars & Sense

There are good housing bargains still to be found in Merritton – both for purchasers and for renters. Prices for shopping and dining out are a little higher here than elsewhere in town, in line with the renovations of new upscale businesses that have opened up shop in the area.
