Introduction

Todmorden in Toronto is bounded by Cosburn in the south and the Don River in the north. The eastern boundary runs up Coxwell and Barbara Crescent, along Taylor Creek, and up Don Mills to the edge of the parkland. The western boundary runs up Pape to O’Connor, east to Donlands, back northwest along Donlands until coming to Pape again, then north to the Don River.

Lifestyle

Named after the village in England where some of its original families came from, Todmorden is a quiet neighbourhood with a history closely linked to the Don River. In the 18th and 19th centuries, mills along the river produced paper, bricks, and other products used to build Toronto. The area now is home to people who enjoy its community feel and relaxed and quiet atmosphere.

The quiet Todmorden neighbourhood is a moderately priced area. Housing prices generally range from average to below average, although most semi-detached houses are priced a little higher. The varied shops and restaurants in the area also have prices that are considered to be average, and will work for different budgets.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Todmorden is a reasonably priced, safe, and quiet neighbourhood. There are restaurants and shops, great parks with trails connecting to the Don River network, and plenty of public community spaces and activities. There isn’t a lot of nightlife, although there are a few bars and pubs, and there isn’t a lot of entertainment in the area.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

There are several bus routes running through Todmorden, including 24-hour routes on Cosburn and Pape. Cosburn also has a bike lane, making it easy for cyclists to get across the neighbourhood. Drivers can easily access the Don Valley Parkway, and parking is allowed on side streets and at shopping areas on main streets.

In the Area

There are some excellent facilities around Todmorden. A library and community centre are on Pape, and there is a sports complex on the south side of Cosburn. An elementary and middle school lie within the neighbourhood’s boundaries, and there is a high school just on the other side of Coxwell. There are some great parks in the area, and Toronto East General Hospital and the East York Civic Centre.

Todmorden residents are slightly older than average, with 15 per cent of residents being over the age of 65 and only 25 per cent being 24 or under. Greek is the most common mother tongue and home language after English. Most households consist of couples with or without children, and most seniors live with family.

The Vibe

Todmorden is a quiet neighbourhood with a strong community vibe. There are lots of community spaces and events, particularly in the summer, and many people who live here are long-term residents. There are a few shopping strips with stores and restaurants on Coxwell, Donlands, and Pape, although people looking for a lot of variety or more unusual items would be better off heading downtown.
