Kleinburg sits on a narrow patch of land tucked between two branches of the Humber River. The “old town” village is bordered by Hwy. 27 on the west and Stegman’s Mill Road on the east. Kleinburg was named either after its former owner, John N. Kline, or the name is a direct (and well-suited) translation from German, literally meaning "small mountain."
One-off eateries and sidewalk cafes beckon as you try (usually unsuccessfully) to pass them without being lured by the sweet and savoury aromas. The charming main street, Islington, is transformed from busy Toronto artery to peaceful, park-flanked strip of boutiques housed in historic buildings. Surrounding the main drag, an abundance of walking and hiking trails, forests and parkland sits two branches of the Humber River making up Kleinburg's boundaries.
Kleinburg is a living picture of a Group of Seven artwork, many of which are on display at the local McMichael Canadian Art Collection. From its rolling hills and treed valleys, to its charming main street lined with general stores and ice cream shoppes, historic Kleinburg brings a bit of nostalgia to the modern day. It’s past doesn’t escape you.
A quick snapshot of Kleinburg households reveals a majority are English speaking and university educated, married with children, and mostly home owners with a small fraction making up the rental market. Kleinburg residents are a friendly bunch who enjoy life at a slower pace, as evidenced by the packed sidewalk patios and parks.
Kleinburg is not for the light of pocket, whether you’re looking to spend an afternoon shopping or a lifetime living. This village is home to historic detached houses and the surrounding area hosts upscale estate homes on sprawling lots. Shops on the main drag are one-off boutiques boasting fine merchandise, art and hand-made finds that’ll cost you, for quality and the charm-factor.
Kleinburg is easily accessed via Hwy. 27 and Islington Avenue. But if you prefer to let someone else do the driving for you, GO Transit stops in the centre of town at Islington and Nashville, as well as York Region Transit/VIVA. Of course, walking through this intimate community is always a viable option!
Kleinburg is the essence of small-town living, with its main attractions being the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Kortright Centre for Conservation, Humber River Trails and Bindertwine Park, Copper Creek Golf Course, and The Doctor's House – a wedding hot spot boasting a chapel, seven ballrooms and surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens.
Long-time residents and casual day-trippers love Kleinburg for its abundant nature, culture, and historic charm – a great place to take a walk, have lunch or take the kids for a fun day. At the same time, many locals consider the influx of “tourists” as a standing invitation for weekend invasion.
