Lifestyle

There are lots of park and greenery, as well as sports facilities and a waterfront trail, that are attractive to both local residents and people from other parts of the city.

The Vibe

Port Whitby is a quiet, peaceful neighbourhood in the southern part of Whitby. The area has plenty of parks, and the streets are green with trees and grass. The lake is nearby, and bodies of water stretch far up into Port Whitby. The area has some shopping and restaurants, but not a lot. It’s a beautiful area to walk through, although there isn’t a lot of entertainment or nightlife.

Meet the Neighbours

Port Whitby is a relatively young neighbourhood, with a higher proportion of children, young families and young adults than the Durham region in general. Port Whitby has a lower unemployment rate than Durham Region. The area also hosts more recent immigrants than Durham Region in general, providing a welcome neighbourhood diversity.

In the Area

Port Whitby has plenty of facilities for local residents; there is a public school, off-leash dog park, sporting centre, and lots of parks and greenspace, and the waterfront trail attracts people from all over Whitby. Port Whitby is also home to the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, and the Whitby GO train station.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

There are a few bus lines that run through Port Whitby, but the main method of transportation in the neighbourhood is by car. Streets are built wide to accommodate car traffic, and street parking is available on most streets. The Whitby GO train station is in Port Whitby, and serves as a hub for commuters and other people travelling in the region.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Port Whitby is a peaceful, reasonably priced neighbourhood. There are lots of parks and greenspace, the waterfront trail and the sporting facilities at the Iroquois Sports Centre are both big draws, and the GO station is conveniently close by. However, there isn’t a lot of shopping or nightlife - people looking for entertainment will need to make the short trip to Downtown Whitby.

Dollars & Sense

Port Whitby is a mid-priced area, with prices ranging from the low to the high side of average. Detached, semi-detached, and townhouses can all be found in Port Whitby, and new condo buildings are going up in several locations in the neighbourhood. Prices for buying and renting are above average for the Durham region but still affordable.
