Whyte Ridge

Winnipeg

Introduction

A residential subdivision in the southwest of Winnipeg, Whyte Ridge is a quiet, family community consisting primarily of detached homes. The area is bordered by McGillvray Boulevard to the north, Kenaston Boulevard to the east, Brady Road to the west, and a boundary line to the south that's created by extending the path of Bishop Grandin Boulevard just east of Waverley Street to Brady Road.

Lifestyle

Whyte Ridge's two man-made lakes (East Lake and West Lake) provide residents with picturesque views and plenty of walking and cycling paths to enjoy the outdoors. Just minutes from shopping, restaurants, and other services, this spacious subdivision is built on former farmland south of the townsite historically known as Fort Whyte. The nearby FortWhyte Alive nature centre features trails, an aquarium, and bison-viewing to educate and entertain families.

Dollars & Sense

Construction in Whyte Ridge began in 1986 to meet the growing demand for good-quality, affordable new family homes in Winnipeg's affluent south end. Though considered one of Winnipeg's wealthier neighbourhoods, with an average household income in excess of $100,000 as of the 2006 Statistics Canada census, Whyte Ridge remains more accessible than other south Winnipeg communities. Cost-conscious big-box retailers such as Walmart, Costco, and IKEA are conveniently located minutes away.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

With its low crime rates, parks, schools, and outdoor activities, Whyte Ridge is an idyllic location to raise a family. However, until the area's first apartment complex was constructed, if your family didn't want or couldn't afford a detached home, you were out of luck. Luckily for renters, The Ridge, a four-storey, 84-unit apartment building, completed construction on the corner of McGillivray Boulevard and Dunkley Street in 2014.

Whyte Ridge is a 10 minute drive from the University of Manitoba and fewer than 30 minutes from other major destinations, including the University of Winnipeg, the airport, and downtown. According to the Statistics Canada 2006 census results, 83.9 per cent of residents drive a vehicle while only 4.8 per cent use public transportation. Winnipeg Transit routes 84, 86, and 181 service the area.

In the Area

Nature is front-and-centre here with East and West Lake, the FortWhyte Alive nature centre, and Scurfield and Leon Bell parks all available to be enjoyed by area residents. There are two schools (elementary and middle) conveniently located on Scurfield Boulevard along with an active community centre on Fleetwood Road. Just outside of the subdivision you'll find a number of retailers, including Kenaston Crossing and IKEA.

Meet the Neighbours

Whyte Ridge is a suburban community of families and professionals with an average household income of $106,019, as of the 2006 census by Statistics Canada. Households of four to five people make up almost half of residents (45.4 per cent). The abundance of green space, detached homes, and access to nearby shops and services makes the area an appealing option for families.

The Vibe

A quiet, safe place to raise a family, this suburban subdivision boasts attractive homes and a low crime rate. Birdwatchers can take in the Canada Geese, pelicans, ducks, and other fowl that visit the area's two man-made lakes while the kids let off some steam in the neighbourhood's plentiful parks and playgrounds.
