NEIGHBOURHOOD

Canterbury Park

Winnipeg

Introduction

Originally part of the City of Transcona before amalgamating into the City of Winnipeg in 1972, Canterbury Park is surrounded by attractive parklands and provides convenient access to the rest of the city. The neighbourhood is bordered by the Manitoba Hydro Right-of-Way to the north, the Perimeter Highway to the east, Dugald road to the south, and Redonda and Ravenhurst streets to the west.

Lifestyle

The established and growing Canterbury Park community has plenty to offer residents. Natural parkland, schools, nearby shops, recreational facilities, a mix of housing options and good access to the rest of the city continue to attract people to this eastern Winnipeg neighbourhood. Most of the area's developments – including schools, parks, and houses – began in the 1970s, but more residential developments are available in the southeast corner of Canterbury.

The Vibe

The community is a haven for young families who value green space, affordable homes, quality schools, and reasonable commutes. Downtown Winnipeg is a 40-minute drive from the area, but residents can access any number of amenities – including shopping and professional and emergency services –?within walking distance or less than a 15-minute drive away. Proximity to the well-established Transcona community brings a wealth of recreational opportunities at Canterbury's doorstep.

Meet the Neighbours

As of the 2006 Statistics Canada census, Canterbury Park had a population of 5,410. The strong family presence in the community was reflected in the large portion of residents aged 0-19 (32 per cent) and 25-49 (44 per cent). Couples with children living at home are more common in Canterbury Park than in the rest of Winnipeg, and nearly half of the neighbourhood's families included two children.

In the Area

Located minutes from the lakes and parklands found in the outskirts of Winnipeg, Canterbury Park is a great fit for those who enjoy a quick escape from the city. The neighbouring community of Transcona – with its country club, pools, and golf course – provide plenty of opportunities for fun and fitness while the nearby Kildonan Place shopping centre gives residents convenient access to more than 95 retailers and services.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Drivers can easily access Canterbury Park off Dugald Road and Ravenhurst Street, with the Ravenhurst extension having significantly improved traffic flow to other neighbourhoods in south, southwest, and northeast Winnipeg as well as downtown. Proximity to lakes and parks surrounding Winnipeg's perimeter cuts down on travel time for those looking to get out and enjoy nature. Major Winnipeg Transit bus routes are also accessible on Ravenhurst Street and Kildare Avenue.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

For young families looking to become homeowners in a safe and quiet area, Canterbury Park is a welcome getaway from the city's hustle and bustle. For people desiring a walkable neighbourhood with rental options and access to a vibrant nightlife and downtown employment, Canterbury Park may disappoint. Good transit links, accessible roadways, and recreational and shopping opportunities nearby provide the best of both worlds if you prefer something in between.

Dollars & Sense

As of the 2006 census, Canterbury Park enjoyed a 4 per cent unemployment rate, which is lower than the 5 per cent Winnipeg-wide average, while the average annual income was higher than the city average ($70,852 versus $63,023). There's a range of shopping options with Canada Safeway on Kildare Avenue East as well as the nearby Kildonan Place and Crossroads shopping centres. Plentiful parks provide free entertainment for families.
