A small residential neighbourhood located within the broader Transcona area of Winnipeg, Mission Gardens features attractive greenspaces and plenty of reasonably-priced, detached family homes. Originally part of the old City of Transcona before amalgamating into the City of Winnipeg in 1972, the area is bordered by Plessis Road, Dugald Road, Pandora Avenue, and lines of both the Central Manitoba and Canadian National Railways.
Mission Gardens is a newer residential neighbourhood in the greater Transcona area, which is known for its connection to the railway and its abundance of parks. Residents here enjoy proximity to the Transcona Golf Club, an affordable 18-hole golf course open to members and the public with a pro shop and clubhouse on site.
A suburban spot consisting primarily of detached homes, Mission Gardens residents enjoy a quiet life while still having access to the shops and services available throughout the larger Transcona area. Bordered by the Canadian National Railway's Redditt line on the south and Central Manitoba Railway's Pine Falls line on the west, Mission Gardens maintains strong railway ties to Transcona (which was named for the Transcontinental Railway and Lord Strathcona).
Mission Gardens' affordable detached homes appeal to families, who make up a large portion of the population. In addition to single parents and common-law couples with children, just over half of residents were married and almost half of those couples had children living at home as of the Statistics Canada 2006 census. This community is home to a range of age groups, with most residents aged between 0-19 or 35-59.
The Bernie Wolfe Community School provides instruction for elementary students and features an indoor pool that is open to the public. Besides private residences, the bulk of what you'll find in Mission Gardens are churches and parks. However, a variety of small retailers and other services can be accessed throughout greater Transcona. Just outside the area is Kildonan Place Shopping Centre, with more than 100 stores and services available.
Located in the old City of Transcona, Mission Gardens is approximately a 30-minute drive from both downtown Winnipeg and the airport. The community contains 24 bus stops and just over 10 per cent of the population claimed public transportation as their primary form of transport in the 2006 census. To cut down on traffic congestion caused by passing trains in the neighbourhood, a Plessis Road Underpass is being constructed.
While the connection to the railway is an interesting part of Transcona's history, waiting in traffic for trains to pass is somewhat less intriguing. Luckily for residents, a $77 million dollar solution in the form of the Plessis Road Underpass was approved in 2012. Set to open in 2015, the underpass has caused headaches for residents with road closures and delays, but will ultimately make accessing the area more convenient.
A comfortable middle-class neighbourhood, Mission Gardens residents enjoy an average household income close to $10,000 above the Winnipeg city-wide average (2006 census). House prices, on the other hand, were below the city-wide average at $148,255, making the community an affordable option for potential homeowners. For low-cost, high-flavour dining options within the larger Transcona area, residents can order up burgers and pizza at Dal's Drive Inn, Restaurant and Lounge.
