Introduction

A large and generally affluent suburban area, River Heights is bordered by Route 90 to the west, the Assiniboine River to the north, Cambridge Street to the east, and Taylor Avenue to the south. The area is divided into two neighbourhood clusters: River Heights East and River Heights West, encompassing 17 Winnipeg neighbourhoods in total.

The two neighbourhood clusters that define River Heights – River Heights East and River Heights West – are home to 17 smaller neighbourhoods and include Grant Park, Crescentwood, Lord Roberts, and Riverview, among others. With the plethora of nearby neighbourhood amenities and low crime rates, River Heights is an ideal location for families.

In the Area

When you're not out enjoying the area's cycling and walking paths, you can catch a movie and do some shopping at Grant Park Shopping Centre. For residents who prefer to think outside of the big box, the boutiques on nearby Academy Road await. Fun and fitness are the order of the day at Central Corydon Community Centre, a collaboration of John Franklin, River Heights, and Crescentwood community centres.

The community area of River Heights is located approximately 5 kilometres from downtown Winnipeg and 5.2 kilometres from the airport. According to 2006 census data from Statistics Canada, 63.3 per cent of residents rely on a personal vehicle for transportation while 17 per cent of the population takes advantage of public transportation. The community is also serviced by Winnipeg Transit bus routes.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

According to the Winnipeg Police CrimeStat, while most crime in River Heights is well below the citywide average, property thefts continue to be high in the area. In 2014, police launched an awareness campaign called Project Comet to help combat this issue. The project included increased patrolling of the area as well as officers going door-to-door with information for residents on how to more effectively secure their homes and property.

While River Heights is a generally considered an affluent suburb, its large area spans a number of neighbourhoods encompassing everything from fast food to fine dining, one-bedroom apartments to sprawling riverfront mansions. Shoppers Drug Mart at Grant Park Shopping Mall is an affordable stop for daily needs, while Luxe Label on Corydon features to-die-for designer duds.
