Alces: A nature-inspired community built for connection in southeast Edmonton
March 16, 2026
For more than 30 years, Cantiro has been one of the most prolific land developer and homebuilder outfits in the Edmonton area with award-winning communities and multi-family homes that have withstood the test of time.
Their land development division has crafted some of the most popular and lifestyle-oriented communities in the region, and key to their success is the ability to create environments that reflect the wants and needs of their buyers and match it with the immediate surroundings. They have found success again in their dynamic, young community of Alces in the southeast.
Timeless appeal runs through all of their developments, but Alces is taking its nature-centric beauty up a notch. Alces is redefining what a modern master-planned community can be, one that prioritizes connection, livability, and access to nature.
“From the beginning, Alces was planned as a complete community – not something that would feel finished years down the road,” says Michael Schroder, Development Manager, Cantiro.
“Infrastructure, access, and amenities were designed to move forward together, so residents can experience connectivity, nature, and everyday convenience as the community grows.”
A symbol of strength
Alces (pronounced: al-sis) is Latin for “moose” it is an enduring symbol of strength, pride and elegance in the country. This is what Cantiro is striving for in this latest development – a contemporary community inspired by nature and designed to nurture connections with family and neighbours.
One of Alces’ defining features is how seamlessly nature is woven into the neighbourhood fabric. Storm ponds and existing wetlands are central elements, with walking trails, seating areas, and educational signage encouraging residents to engage with their surroundings.
Sustainability is also built into the landscape itself. The use of drought-tolerant clover reduces water and chemical use while supporting pollinators – an example of how Alces balances environmental responsibility with modern suburban living.
Architecturally, the community strikes a careful balance between variety and cohesion that is mirrored in the four distinct architectural themes – West Coast, Nordic, Modern Prairie, and Contemporary. These create visually dynamic streetscapes, supported by design guidelines that ensure quality across all elevations.
A growing community with momentum
Alces is well into its development lifecycle. More than 550 lots were serviced between 2023 and 2024, with an additional 400 lots in 2025, and the remaining 200 lots in 2026. Full servicing is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with overall build-out continuing into 2027.
There is a wide selection of homes to choose from, including single detached homes, semi-detached homes, row housing, and three-storey homes. “This provides flexibility for first-time buyers, growing families, and move-up purchasers alike,” Schroder says.
The community continues to grow in 2026, even as it marked an important milestone recently with the completion, and re-opening, of Ellerslie Road. The road is now open, improving visibility and access to Alces and supporting continued growth in the area.
“Opening Ellerslie Road and delivering new access points is a major milestone for Alces. These improvements strengthen connectivity today while supporting the long-term growth of the community and surrounding area,” he says.
Furthermore, new and enhanced community entrances are being delivered as part of ongoing development, providing additional access points that strengthen connectivity, improve traffic flow, and support long-term residential and commercial activity. These improvements reflect coordinated planning between developers, engineers, and the City, ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with community build-out.
Amenities that bring people together
Alces was planned out with a host of in-community amenities that makes everyday life a joy. Within the community, residents enjoy a strong mix of recreational and social amenities designed for all ages. These include a landmark playground featuring rope climbers, bridges, slides built into natural terrain, balance elements, and spring riders, as well as a full-size basketball court and a pump track for biking enthusiasts.
Integrated pathways connect homes to parks, wetlands, and informal gathering spaces, while picnic areas and “stop-and-chat” seating nodes encourage casual interaction and a sense of belonging.
Beyond its on-site amenities, Alces benefits from proximity to a wide range of established and growing commercial areas. Retail and services near Ellerslie Road and 34 Street offer everyday conveniences such as restaurants, cafés, personal services, and childcare.
Just minutes away, the Harvest Pointe commercial area provides access to major retailers, grocery stores, banks, medical services, home goods, and dining options. Convenient access to Anthony Henday Drive further connects residents to the rest of the city, making commuting and errands easy while maintaining a quieter residential setting.
