Cooking up a storm in kitchen designs
September 23, 2025
These days when short video clips are king on social media, it seems everyone is a chef sharing cooking tips and culinary expertise on TikTok or YouTube. So it helps having a nice, clean and orderly kitchen as the background.
But the kitchen isn’t just about getting the Instagram double tap, it’s the beating heart of the home, the place where life happens. So a well-designed, functional and stylish kitchen is always paramount, whether one cooks or not.
“The kitchen should feel effortless for cooking, dining, and gathering, while also showcasing a beautiful and timeless design,” says Kristina Plank, Marketing Manager at Excel Homes. “A well-planned layout ensures the space flows seamlessly, with optimal storage and plenty of natural light.”
A livable design is always top-of-mind at Partners Homes’ kitchen, says Michelle Vant Erve, Senior Interior Designer.
“Functionality is always top of mind when we design kitchens for our clients. We focus on creating spaces that not only look beautiful but also work seamlessly for everyday life. Whether it’s how the layout supports cooking and entertaining, or how storage is integrated, our goal is to ensure the kitchen truly enhances the way our homeowners live.”
Combining style and function
A big part of the new homebuyers’ journey is picking a home with the kitchen that most fits their lifestyle. Showhomes are key in giving buyers a sense of what’s available out there, but advice from experts on current style trends, innovations, and materials is always vital.
“We’re seeing a lot of exciting innovations in kitchen design right now,” Vant Erve says. “Panel-ready appliances and drawer-style microwaves are becoming more popular, offering a sleek, integrated look. There’s also a trend toward mixing materials - wood with painted finishes, metals, fluting, and paneling to add texture and depth. Large islands and peninsulas continue to be a favourite, especially when paired with smart pantry solutions that maximize storage and accessibility.”
Plank says recent trends Excel is seeing include extended islands with seating, walk-through pantries that connect directly to the mudroom and garage for easy grocery unloading, and spice kitchens perfect for cooking aromatic dishes.
”Appliance upgrades such as built-in wall ovens, gas cooktops, and smart home technology are also becoming more popular. Modern finishes such as quartz countertops, full-height backsplashes, and black or gold hardware add a touch of sophistication.”
Raising your game
The standard kitchens that both Partners Homes and Excel already include all the essentials and designed with functionality and convenience in mind. But they are flexible enough and easy to upgrade should the buyer choose.
Among the most requested kitchen upgrades Partners is seeing is for cabinetry, storage is, after all, a big component of what makes a kitchen work. “Cabinetry is a big one. Our clients love the ¾-inch Shaker style, and we’re often mixing painted cabinets with natural wood finishes for a more custom feel,” Vant Erve says.
“Appliance upgrades are also high on the list, along with hardware in warm bronze or matte black, which adds a modern yet timeless touch. These upgrades not only elevate the aesthetic but also improve the kitchen’s functionality,” she adds.
Plank says the kitchen might be the one place buyers should include in their upgrade plans, because they are harder to change later.
“We often suggest investing in timeless features like cabinetry and countertops since these create the foundation of the kitchen and are harder to change later, while smaller details can be updated over time,” Plank says.
Popular upgrades at Excel include cabinetry, extended islands, under-cabinet lighting, and gourmet appliance packages.
Inspired choices
Showhomes are the best way to get inspired for your own home, they present the aspirational ideas that homeowners can adapt for their own style. Kitchens can have the biggest impact on the look of the home, so pay attention to the details they include.
“At Partners, we don’t subscribe to a single kitchen style. Each kitchen is a reflection of our client’s personal taste, lifestyle, and functional needs. It’s not about showcasing our style..it’s about bringing their vision to life,” Vant Erve says.
But if you’re looking for inspiration, their new showhomesin Homestead and Logan Landing present their own ideas on how best to use kitchen space, especially in a duplex home. Go to partnershomes.ca for more.
Excel’s newly opened Oxford showhome in Lewisburg gives a great understanding of how style and functionality can combine.
“The Oxford show home in Lewisburg is a perfect showcase of Excel’s kitchen style,” Plank says. “The open concept layout flows seamlessly, balancing style and functionality. There’s plenty of storage and counter space, a spacious island with seating for 4, sleek two toned cabinetry, under cabinet lighting, and built in smart appliances. Plus, a thoughtfully designed spice kitchen with a pantry, maximizing both space and convenience.” More information at excelhomes.ca.
