Five must try soups in Calgary

Winter is here and there’s no better remedy for the cold than a hot bowl of soup to warm your soul – and I’ve tried plenty lately.

Here are five soups at five different restaurants you just have to try this winter season in Calgary:

Spicy Sausage Stew - Don Day Korean Restaurant

Address – 909 7th Avenue SW
Phone – 403-718-0358

The spicy sausage stew at Don Day is meant for two to share, but I think I could finish the whole thing on my own – it’s that good! Served with ham, sliced sausage, vegetables (onions, mushrooms, etc.), kimchi and ramen noodles in a special spicy house-made broth that’s so unique, it will keep you coming back for more.

Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen – Tekkotsu Ya Ramen

Address – 1704 61st Street SE
Phone – 403-569-0785

Tekkotsu Ya Ramen is well worth the trip for some of the best ramen and edamame in the city. While all the soups I’ve had here are exceptionally good, the Tonkotsu Shoyu was one of my favourites with its sweet, rich broth and perfectly cooked, juicy chasu.

Pho Sate Soup – Pho Dau Bo Vietnamese

Address – 4909 17th Avenue SE
Phone – 403-272-5160

Pho Dau Bo’s sate soup has some serious spice to it but is mellowed out by a sweet, peanuty flavour, making for one of the best bowls of spicy pho in city. If you’re really brave, try crushing up some red chili’s and mixing it in for some added heat.

Tortilla Soup – Tres Marias Mexican Food Market

Address – 3514 19th Street SW
Phone – 403-243-5335

This hidden gem in Marda Loop serves up affordable, yet scrumptious homecooked Mexican cuisine. For about seven bucks I got a bowl of tortilla soup with a sweet but spicy tomato broth topped with avocado, goat cheese and nachos which added a crispy texture.

Bulgogi Stew – Don Day Korean Restaurant

Address – 909 7th Avenue SW
Phone – 403-718-0358

We’ve already put Don Day on the list, but their stews are just too good to miss. We also tried the Bulgogi Stew and absolutely loved it. Instead of spicy (like the ham stew), the broth flavour was more sweet and the soup itself was loaded with a ton of veggies that made it quite filling.
