Morrison Homes FundRazor a buzzing success

Maybe it was the only way to get a haircut during the lockdown, but for 14 Morrison Homes staffers, shaving their heads was the best way they can help a community in need.

Led by Morrison Homes marketing director, Sam Hudson, the head-shaving event on May 21 was meant to raise funds for the Calgary Dream Centre’s “FundRazor” event and raise awareness for the plight of some of the city’s most vulnerable.

“Morrison Homes set a goal of $5,000, and we have reached over $10,000 which will be matched by a separate donor of the Calgary Dream Centre, making our total contribution over $20,000,” Hudson tells NextHome. “The best news is, that we’re still accepting and receiving donations.”

Hudson had his locks sheared by his wife, Karen, and children, Chase and Audrey, at the Morrison Homes office, while his colleagues did the same simultaneously over a Zoom video call.

He says he was nervous about the ordeal, and it is the first time he will be shaving off all his hair. But it was all worth it. Karen, the Fund Development Manager for the Calgary Dream Centre who was instrumental in kicking off the fundraising event, says she loved her husband’s new look.

“Everyone at Morrison Homes has been incredibly generous and I can’t thank them enough,” she says.

The Calgary Dream Centre is home to over 371 individuals overcoming homelessness and addiction. Razors for Recovery was launched as part of a larger campaign that aims to raise awareness and much needed funding during this difficult time.

“The Calgary Dream Centre helps the most vulnerable men and women in Calgary as they fight through their addictions and find hope and sobriety,” Karen says. “As we have been hit with this pandemic our friends have been in quarantine and isolation from their families and friends. It has been a struggle to keep spirits up and just as challenging to keep funds coming in.”

The event, she adds, goes a long way in bringing hope to those struggling with addictions and homelessness.
