Formerly known as Port Charlottetown, Charlottetown Historic Seaport has a new name and is getting a new look to go with it. The bulk of the renovations are due to be completed by autumn 2015, just in time for the busiest part of cruise ship season.

Charlottetown Historic Seaport will have one berth dedicated to cruise ship traffic. In addition, there will be 15 bus lanes added to provide better access for local tour operators and taxis. Cruise Terminal, which was previously known as the Charlottetown Seaport Center, will have a pedestrian plaza for tourists to sit down, relax, and plan their visit.

Port Charlottetown also deals with petroleum and aggregate importation. These ships will be serviced at another berth, which will feature a conveyor system to reduce traffic on the wharf. The entire project is expected to cost approximately $5 million. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) is paying half, and the federal government has chipped in $500,000.

Visiting Charlottetown

Charlottetown is a charming Maritime city, and there are several sightseeing options available to tourists. For those who wish to take guided tours, there are a few different kinds to choose from, such as scenic drives, horse-drawn vehicles, sea kayaking, duck boat tours, and even double-decker bus tours.

Another way to see the city is on foot. Many historic sites – such as the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Fanningbank Government House, and the Founders’ Hall – are within easy walking distance.

A bit of shopping

There are several shops located at the Historic Charlottetown Waterfront, and the downtown area of Charlottetown offers many different stores and boutiques too. The Charlottetown Mall and Confederation Mall are popular downtown destinations, and the Anne of Green Gables Store should not be missed.

A bite to eat

Cow's Ice Cream, Charlottetown

There are many restaurants, cafes, and pubs in Charlottetown that serve all kinds of food. Gahan’s House Pub & Brewery is a local favourite, as is the Churchill Arms Irish pub and famous Prince Edward Island export, Cow’s Ice Cream.

Port Charlottetown’s new name and look will enhance tourism in the area, providing a more pleasant experience for cruise ship visitors.
