Stepping out: How to enjoy the balcony

You’ve just bought a condo with a balcony – or maybe you’ve just moved in to a great apartment with a balcony. What is the proper etiquette? Are there rules or fire regulations? You need to know the dos and don'ts so that you can enjoy the balcony.

You may think that it is just like having a mini-backyard but think again – balconies are very different from backyards. They can often be viewed from several directions and are actually closer to being a public space, even though they are part of a private residence. Here are some considerations to help you enjoy the balcony and get into your outdoor space.

Don’t tan in the nude. While some of your neighbours will undoubtedly appreciate this, some won’t and it is not appropriate. Sorry.

Don’t play loud music. Keep it down and keep the neighbours happy. Your new favourite song may sound fantastic at peak volume to you, however, be considerate. After all, do you want to hear their favourite music blasting whenever they feel like it?

Do grow flowers and plants. By all means, put greenery in place, have flowerpots, grow vegetables. There's no reason highrise living has to exclude a garden. Container gardening is very popular and it's amazing what you can grow in a small outdoor space.

Do be safe. If you have children that can climb, never leave them unattended on the balcony or the balcony door open. Also be mindful of pets who may want to escape. A good latch and a bar in the tracks can keep little ones from wandering out – and keep thieves from letting themselves in.

Laundry lines. This varies from place to place. Some buildings will have regulations against laundry lines. It's the eco-friendly way to dry laundry, but you do have to check your building's regulations before you go ahead and wave your delicates outdoors for all to admire.

Smoking. If you are in a building that permits smoking on balconies, then you are good to go. If you are unsure, find out. Some buildings are smoke-free and even smoking on balconies is banned. If you are allowed to smoke on your balcony, keep a sturdy container for butts, and never toss them over. This is a fire hazard and extremely inconsiderate to neighbours below.

Open flames, fire pits and barbecues. This will vary depending on your location. Generally open flames are illegal. There can be exceptions such as a grill or barbecue that is used for cooking food and is supervised at all times. Check the fire code and your local fire department to be sure. Confirm with them and the building's regulations before you purchase a fancy outdoor fire feature like a chiminea. Just because it’s for sale in a local store, doesn’t mean it’s legal for your building.

Do drink tea, coffee, wine, read, relax and take in a breath of fresh air. Getting into the great outdoors (or at least your small concrete patch of it) is what balconies are for. Enjoy the balcony – just stay clothed.
