What about a building of penthouses?

“That was the creative starting point,” explains Edwin Liang of Kenstone Properties, the developer of a new boutique collection of 20 three-bedroom homes at 1555 West 8th Avenue in Vancouver. The ultimate vision? “To curate a collection of extraordinary homes from artists who share the same uncompromising philosophy for approaching design with a clarity of purpose.”

In its essence, 1555 West Eighth has the makings of a bespoke development for discerning homebuyers. Strategically designed to deviate from being just another four walls in the city, the principal architect Steve McFarlane at the Office of McFarlane Biggar Architects + Designers sees this project as an opportunity for “transforming the ordinary through innovation and collaboration.”

Two side-by-side, four and eight-storey buildings will be clad in a combination of 22-gauge steel panels, tempered glass, western red cedar and cast-in-place architectural concrete. While metal cladding isn’t a new concept, the designers worked closely with the fabricator to craft “a dynamic surface that subtly changes appearance as the sun tracks across the sky,” explains McFarlane.

Large, open floor plans up to 1,882 square feet, will feature outdoor patios, floor-to-ceiling double-glazed windows, brushed oak engineered wide-plank flooring and made-to-measure European finishes.

The kitchen is definitely a showpiece, driven by function with textural and visual interest. Interior designer Michelle Biggar chose Italian manufacturer Friul Intagli for the custom cabinetry—stunning white lacquer in a matte finish paired with white oak doors. White Corian countertops are accompanied by premium European appliances including 36” Bertazzoni gas cooktop, convection oven with slide-out range hood, Fhiaba integrated fridge, and Blomberg integrated dishwasher.

Luxurious details continue in the bathrooms with heated Royal Mosa porcelain flooring, an oversized rain shower with frameless glass and Lava Grigia stone slab countertops.

“It’s a timeless palette with the warmth of the West Coast sensibility added in to provide a quietly elegant backdrop for a life in comfort,” describes Biggar.

Even the heating system surpasses the norm—a Belgian system called Jaga with four individually-controlled climatic zones and vents hidden in the ceiling or recessed into the walls.
Beyond the private Zen-like courtyard, Vancouver’s desirable Burrard Slopes neighbourhood provides everything from Yoga studios and schools to premium dining and shopping, all within walking distance from downtown.
