Versatility is key in appeal of laned homes

It’s called the jewel-box of homes, something quaint with a fairy tale quality about it. The laned home has always had this appeal, with its big windows, sometimes even a veranda or a front porch, it carries a more striking street profile, and builders today are designing it to offer more versatility than ever before.

The laned homes – or homes with rear lane access – have been the preferred starter home for first-time homebuyers, but their appeal goes way beyond that now.

“For many buyers, a laned home hits the sweet spot between affordability and long-term value,” says, Cantiro’s VP of Homes, Edmonton Region: Gary Hoeft, as they offer the benefits of a detached, single-family home (privacy, space, and ownership) at a more approachable price point.

“For buyers looking to balance lifestyle, flexibility, and investment potential, laned homes continue to stand out as one of the most compelling options in today’s market,” he adds.

The appeal of laned homes

Because garages and parking are accessed from the rear lane, the front of the home is designed for living: welcoming streetscapes, larger windows, and more natural light, according to Hoeft.

“Laned homes are also designed with how people live today in mind – walkable neighbourhoods, efficient use of space, and layouts that adapt over time.”

Laned homes offer something different:

  • No shared walls: a true detached home experience
  • More control over your space: inside and out
  • A private yard and flexible layout options
  • Rear detached garage: keeping the front of your home focused on curb appeal instead of parking
  • Side entrances for basement suites

Laned lifestyle

Laned homes are attracting a wide range of buyers, from first-time homebuyers to investors.

Hoeft says they fit the first-time homebuyer as they are often the most accessible way to step into detached homeownership, offering more space and privacy, without stretching the budget.

While investors who like the option of renting out the home or at least part of it like the option for basement suite. “Laned homes offer strong rental potential and long-term value through additional income streams. More broadly, they appeal to buyers who want flexibility, a home that works today and evolves with them over time.”

Versatile design

Laned homes have evolved significantly, both in design and functionality, and Cantiro’s laned homes are being designed with adaptability in mind.

Most now are built with side entrances for future suite flexibility or letting the dog into the yard with ease.

“Our Metro Shift 18 RL and Metro Adapt 18 RL models are designed with separate entries and multi-use spaces,” Hoeft points out.

“There’s a new model coming soon: Metro Align 18 RL, featuring a bonus room upstairs, and main floor den, with the option for main floor guest bed and full bathroom. These innovations reflect how buyers are thinking about their homes, not just as a place to live, but as a long-term financial and lifestyle asset.”

Cantiro’s Metro Shift showhome is a rear-laned single-family home that offers even more space and versatility than many buyers expect. The expansive open-concept main floor features a spacious kitchen, dining, and living area. The Metro Shift 18 RL is designed for everyday family living as well as entertaining.

“It’s a great example of how laned homes are evolving, combining thoughtful design, flexibility, and long-term value in one home,” he adds.

Wide availability

Cantiro builds in seven communities across Edmonton, and in eight more communities in the surrounding region, with their laned homes available in several of them.

They have the Metro Shift 18 RL show home with basement suite in Alces in southeast Edmonton, and build rear-laned homes in Riverstead at Keswick and Glenridding Ravinein the southwest, Rosenthal in the west, Elan in Beaumont, and Greenbury Park in Spruce Grove.

“Our laned homes typically start in the mid $400s, offering one of the most attainable paths into detached home ownership,” Hoeft says. “With added flexibility like suites and garage options, they also provide strong long-term value.
