Oliver is located west of downtown perched on the hill facing the North Saskatchewan river valley between 109th and 124th streets and on either side of Jasper Avenue. It has been one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in the city for over 100 years. Many of original heritage buildings exist, including St. Joseph’s Basilica, the cathedral church that saw Wayne Gretzky wed.
Oliver caters to those who love the living in the heart of a vibrant city. A trip to the pub after work, dinner date at a romantic restaurant, or spending Saturday morning with the paper at a cafe are all popular pastimes here. Peace and quiet can also be found in the back residential streets of Oliver, at the community garden or Oliver Park.
Oliver is a cool place to live, simply put. The diversity of historic buildings blending with modern condos, community gardens with boutique shops, cozy cafes with fine dining establishments all contribute to its unique urban atmosphere. Residents can be found relaxing by the outdoor Oliver Pool or frantically chasing the bus down Jasper Avenue. In Oliver it’s possible to be care-free and fast-paced all at the same time.
The majority of Oliver residents are young professionals in their 20s and 30s. The density of apartment and townhome condos makes this an affordable and trendy choice for young professionals. Still, a mature neighbourhood comes with mature residents, and these young adults share their community with a population of senior Oliver-originals.
The prices in restaurants and bars are just as diverse as the restaurants and bars themselves! You could score a night of half-priced draft at a pool hall or pay a premium for the wine-of-the-month at a gourmet cafe. Retail ranges from consignment shops to pricey boutiques. Similar price diversity exists in the housing market. In Oliver, you get what you pay for, but often you’ll get a little more.
Oliver’s central location has given residents prime access to main bus routes and the LRT line, all running to pretty much anywhere in the city. Roadways provide similar access to drivers. Shoot down Jasper Avenue to reach the downtown core, or take one of many major roadways into the river valley and beyond. Stony Plain Road gives quick access to the west end and the High Level Bridge leads south.
Downtown Edmonton looks over Oliver in the east, providing access to places of work, shopping centres, recreational facilities and community services. The Edmonton General Hospital, medical centres, dental clinics and other health services are in the neighbourhood. Elementary children may attend Oliver School and MacEwan University is literally walking distance from Oliver.
Those who crave the city-life must take the good with the bad. Living close to restaurants, bars, shops, Jasper Avenue and the downtown core means living in constant traffic. People are coming and going 24 hours a day. Housing is affordable, but because Oliver is located close to less-than-desirable neighbourhoods that skirt downtown, it can fall victim to crime that occasionally crosses over.
A hand-picked selection of new home and condos for sale in Oliver. For those who love the thrill of anticipation of getting into a brand new home or condo.
With over 45 shops and services, Oliver Square is the commercial hub of the neighbourhood. Restaurants, cafes, retail shops, grocery stores, medical services, and banks can all be found here.
