Carry on my wayward lawn

Now that the protracted winter will soon thaw and the early signs of that elusive spring awakens slowly across the country – you may find yourself ready to ‘spring’ forward into the next season that brings plus temperatures, and verdant grass.

If you bought a new construction house like I did in the last year and a half, you may have been elated when your builder laid down beautiful strips of lush sod that finally eradicated the dust and dour of your neighbourhood. My partner and I tended to our lawn with a level of care that made my family proud – in fact, I will brag and say it was the greenest lawn on the block.

So, you can imagine my obvious horror now that the snow has melted and left us with a lawn that is a mutilated mess from what it looked like before the powdery white stuff fell from the sky and rained hell upon my green dreams. There are deep fissures that run across our lawn that makes my heart palpitate and politely decline my family’s visits.

Where had we gone wrong?

Well, the truth is: we didn’t do anything wrong. Not really, anyway
As it turns out, the cracks in the ground have nothing to do with anything that we did explicitly. It would appear that despite being once buried under two feet of snow that’s melted with the warmer temperatures, the lawn is drier than a slice of two-day old pizza that’s been sitting on the counter.

The good news here is that the damage can be undone. Unlike the pizza, an inch of compost in early spring alongside some grass seed and a good soaking of water will be all the TLC this wayward lawn of ours will need to be as green as can be.
Hopefully, your lawn isn’t in as rough shape as ours is, and if it is – keep calm and water on.
