Considering a condo? 7 reasons it might be a good move
February 29, 2016
Condominiums come in all shapes and sizes, from highrise condominiums that are seemingly popping up all over Canadian cities to lowrise duplexes and townhomes. Due to the wide range of benefits condo living offers, they tend to attract a diverse group of buyers including, downsizers and first-time homebuyers. Here are seven reasons why considering a condo purchase might be right for you:
1. Someone else does the work
The biggest advantage to a condo most often quoted by owners is the convenience factor. Monthly condo fees cover things like cleaning gutters, shoveling snow, mowing the lawn, and so on. If you don't have the time, patience, or desire to take care of external maintenance issues, condo living would provide a nice alternative to keeping up the appearances of a house.
Amenities
While few people can afford to have a swimming pool, hot tub, gym, and a home theatre in their residence, condo buildings often offer these amenities to residents, in addition to shared common rooms big enough to host large get-togethers.
Social scene
For many folks, shared amenities provide a chance to meet and socialize with others. Condo buildings often cater to a specific demographic, such as young professionals or older baby-boomers. Living in the same building as others with similar interests or outlooks provides social opportunities that you may not always find in a single-family dwelling.
4. Frequent travellers
If you travel frequently, whether it’s for business or as a snowbird, a condo lets you lock the door and leave without asking someone to take care of your home and yard.
5. There's only you
Condos are a great space for one or two people. How many rooms do you need to live in anyway? Considering a condo could mean less spring cleaning, less "stuff," and more time to do what you really want.
6. Downtown living
Often, the only affordable way to buy a home in the downtown area is through a condo purchase. If you like the vibe and excitement of downtown living, or you want to walk to work, considering a condo could be a good choice.
7. Security
There's another locked door between your front door and the street. Many newer condos offer security features such as cameras at the front door to see who's ringing the bell. And neighbours surround you, too.
While there are downsides to living in a condo too, many buyers will see more pros than cons. Considering a condo might just be the right thing for you.
